Littleton
Agriculture remained the staple industry of Littleton until and throughout World War II. The manufacturing industry then quickly became the dominant employer, playing a major role in the housing development boom of the fifties, sixties and seventies. The construction of Arapahoe Community College in 1965 and the Chatfield Reservoir in 1972 further enhanced the small community's appeal and drew additional new residents. By 1990, when Littleton celebrated its centennial, its population had grown to more than 33,000.

More than 16,000 Littleton students attend the 23 schools in Littleton School District #6. The district includes a number of nationally acclaimed schools, which provide small class sizes. More than half of the teachers in these schools hold advanced degrees. Students seeking post-secondary education have access to Arapahoe Community College. The college offers seventy Associate's degree programs and employs more than 1,300 part- and full-time faculty and staff, making it one of Littleton's largest employers. A number of other colleges and universities are nearby, including the University of Colorado at Denver and the University of Denver.

Littleton hosts a number of special events and festivals throughout the year, such as the popular "Western Welcome Week" each August. This 8-day festival includes a parade, a concert series, fireworks, a circus, carnival rides, a golf tournament, book sales, car shows, theatrical performances and "Highland Games." Prizes are given for the best diver, the horseshoe and tennis champions, the best quilt, the best cake, the fastest lady nail-driver and the fastest husband/wife needle threading teams. There is also a "fat men's race" restricted to gentlemen over the age of forty. From morning till night, the weeklong festival offers something for everyone. The festival is dedicated to the memory of Houston Waring, editor of the Littleton Independent and founder of the festival in 1929.

For day-to-day entertainment, residents picnic, barbeque and relax with friends and family at one of the many local parks, such as Sterne Park. Littleton is home to the Centennial Golf & Tennis Center as well as the Lone Tree Golf Club, which houses an executive 18-hole, Arnold Palmer-designed course. The Carson Nature Center educates the public regarding the natural history and wildlife of the South Platte River area. South Platte Park encompasses more than 600 acres and a variety of ecosystems, which attract a wide variety of animal and bird life.
